The understory of a coffee block, still wet after rain

Our origins

Coffee starts with place.

We work across Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh's Araku Valley — four regions, two mountain ranges, and both species.

The growing regions we source from

Karnataka

Chikmagalur · Coorg (Kodagu)

India's largest coffee state and the centre of our sourcing. Chikmagalur and Coorg grow both species under shade, and between them they supply most of the washed Arabica and washed Robusta in this catalogue.

Region by region

India’s rich coffee regions

From the Western Ghats to the Araku Valley. Only regions we actually source from appear here, and only the detail we can stand behind — no altitude bands or rainfall figures we have not been given.

Robusta & Arabica origin

Kerala

Robusta country, and the coast the monsooned lots are made on. Wayanad sits at the top of the Western Ghats; the open warehouses that swell Monsoon Malabar are further down, on the Malabar coast.

Arabica origin

Tamil Nadu

The Nilgiris, on the eastern shoulder of the same range. Higher, cooler, and almost entirely Arabica — which is what the region is bought for.

Andhra Pradesh

Araku Valley

The one region here outside the Western Ghats, in the Eastern Ghats of Andhra Pradesh. Smallholder Arabica, and the source of the single-farmer parcels small enough to fit a roaster's next release.

Shade grown

Coffee under a working canopy

Indian coffee grows in shade, under a canopy that is usually working land in its own right — pepper trained up the same trees, cardamom below. It is why a block looks like forest rather than a field, and it is part of why the cup carries what it does.
